Jormuntor J2, known as Jail Jormungand (ジェイルヨルムンガンド, Jeiru Yorumungando) in Japan, is an Energy Layer released as part of the Burst System as well as the Dual Layer System. It debuted as the Prize Layer of the BG-03 Random Layer Collection Vol. 3 in July 2016 and was later released in the B-69 Booster Jail Jormungand Infinity Cycle on January 21st, 2017. It later debuted in western countries with the release of the Jormuntor J2 & Fengriff F2 Dual Pack.

Jormuntor J2 has a mostly circular shape composed of two slopes with slight ridges and two small gaps/protrusions at the end of the slopes. The center of the Layer shows two serpents spitting fire, meant to represent the Layer's Japanese namesake; Jörmungandr, the Midgard Serpent of Norse Mythology. While the well-balanced and defensive-looking shape makes this Layer appear to be good for Stamina and Defense Combinations, the Japanese release of Jail Jormungand only has one good tooth, with the rest of its teeth being sub-par at best. This makes Jail Jormungand an ultimately useless Layer for competitive play.

While Jail Jormungand has an optimal shape for Defense Combinations, its poor teeth make it a very risky option for competitive play. Furthermore, with the release of the Cho-Z Layer System, especially with the release of Layers such as Archer Hercules and Revive Phoenix, Jail Jormungand is too light to be competitive.

As such, Jail Jormungand is recommended for collection purposes only.

Differences in the Hasbro Version

Hasbro's Jormuntor J2 is virtually unchanged from Takara Tomy's Jail Jormungand, albeit the slopes on Jormuntor J2 are above-average, much stronger than the sub-par teeth of Jail Jormungand, making it a safer choice for Defense Combinations. However, with the release of SwitchStrike Layers such as Balkesh B3 and Spryzen Requiem S3, Jormuntor J2 is too light to be competitive.

As such, Jormuntor J2 is also recommended for collection purposes only.

  • Jormuntor J2’s basis has ties to Fenrir (Fengriff), Odin (Odax), and Ragnaruk (Roktavor), all of which have Energy Layers in the Burst System based upon them in Norse mythology.
