Regulus R3, known as Shelter Regulus (シェルターレグルス, Sherutā Regurusu) in Japan, is an Energy Layer released as part of the Burst System as well as the God Layer System. It debuted with the release of the B-95 Random Booster Vol. 8 Shelter Regulus.5S.Tw on October 21st, 2017. It later debuted in western countries with the release of the SwitchStrike Starter Pack Regulus R3 5Star Tower.

Description

Regulus R3 is a Balance Type Energy Layer that features two lion heads and two lion claws on each side meant to represent this Layer’s namesake; Regulus, the brightest star in the Leo Constellation. As part of the SwitchStrike/God Layer System, Regulus R3 features a gimmick; the lion heads and claws can extend and retract in battle to create an automatic "Attack Mode" and "Defense Mode", akin to a reversed Variares Metal Wheel from Metal Fight Beyblade.

Due to centrifugal force, the lion heads and claws will extend outward to create more gaps in the Layer and when centrifugal force drops later in battle, the heads and claws will retract, decreasing the gaps in the Layer. In theory, this is meant to increase Burst Attack potential early in battle and reduce Stamina by reducing recoil to potentially Out Spin the opponent if a Burst is not achieved. However in practice, the change in recoil is minuscule at best with no observable change in performance, furthermore, Regulus R3's perimeter is square, even in "Defense Mode", which creates detrimental recoil its gimmick was trying to avoid.

For the Takara Tomy release of Shelter Regulus, its performance is further hampered by its weak teeth which, when combined with the recoil inducing square shape, causes Shelter Regulus Combinations to Burst far too easily in battle. As such, if one prefers to use Shelter Regulus, it is critical to pair it up with a Performance Tip with a strong spring lock such as Eternal, Destroy', or Xtreme'.

Overall

Due to Shelter Regulus' weak teeth and recoil inducing square shape, the Layer incurs Self-Bursts far too easily. Furthermore, with the release of Cho-Z Layers such as Hell Salamander and Archer Hercules, Shelter Regulus is too light to be competitive.

As such, Shelter Regulus is recommended for collection purposes only.

Differences in the Hasbro Version

Aside from the irremovable God Chip, Hasbro's Regulus R3 is virtually unchanged from Takara Tomy's Shelter Regulus with the same ineffective gimmick, square shape, and weak but below-average Burst Resistance.

As such, Regulus R3 is also recommended for collection purposes only.

Trivia

  • Regulus R3’ gimmick is identical to Variares, only reversed.
  • Since both Regulus R3 and the Roktavor Line both use the letter "R" for identification, Regulus R3 uses a reversed "R" for differentiation.
