Unicrest U2, known as Unlock Unicorn (アンロックユニコーン, Anrokku Yunikōn) in Japan, is an Energy Layer released as part of the Burst System, as well as the Dual Layer System. It debuted with the release of the B-56 Booster Unlock Unicorn Down Needle on August 6th, 2016. It later debuted in western countries with the release of the Doomscizor D2 & Unicrest U2 Dual Pack.

Unicrest U2 is a round Energy Layer designed for Defense that features ten blades. Nine of these blades are made up of clear plastic and make up the "mane" of the Layer, which are smooth, compact, and are positioned in a manner that is meant to deflect attacks, while the tenth one is made of colored plastic and is molded into the shape of a horn, meant to represent the Layer's Japanese namesake; the mythical Unicorn; its face featured in the center looking to the left. Unlike most Layers of the Dual Layer System, Unicrest U2 features a gimmick; it can counterattack the opponent.

Unlike the nine blades of the Layer's mane, the horn is shaped differently; in a much thinner manner and rests at a much higher angle than the rest of the blades. This creates a sizable gap that, in theory, is meant to provide Smash Attack to Burst the opponent and/or drain their Stamina. However, in practice, the angle and direction of the horn is ill-suited for such a purpose, and instead creates a point of recoil that becomes more recoil heavy when off balance. This in turn, drains Unicrest U2's Stamina.

This problem is further exacerbated for the Takara Tomy release of Unlock Unicorn, teeth wise; which are very short and weak. While they are capable of withstanding the low recoil provided by the Layer's mane, the recoil provided by the gap the horn creates makes Unlock Unicorn very prone to losses by Burst.

While the weight distribution of Unlock Unicorn does grant Stamina potential, this does little to compensate for the recoil and issues with its weak teeth.

While Unlock Unicorn does have some Stamina potential thanks to its overall round shape, it is still outclassed by other Layers such as Deathscyther and Dark Deathscyther. This, combined with the recoil of the self-destructive counterattack gimmick, and the weak teeth of the Takara Tomy release renders this Layer outclassed for competitive use. Furthermore, with the release of the Cho-Z Layer System, especially with the release of Cho-Z Layers such as Hell Salamander and Revive Phoenix, Unlock Unicorn is far too light to be competitive.

As such, Unlock Unicorn is recommended for collection purposes only.

Differences in the Hasbro Version

Hasbro's Unicrest U2 features strong slopes that grant the Layer high Burst Resistance. The weakness of the horn still applies, but due to the aforementioned slopes, it is less of a threat to its overall performance. However, Unicrest U2 has significantly less Stamina, only on par with the Stamina of Kerbeus K2. Due to the reduced Stamina and the recoil inducing horn, Unicrest U2 is outclassed by its predecessor Unicrest. Furthermore, with the release of SwitchStrike Energy Layers such as Balkesh B3 and Spryzen Requiem S3, Unicrest U2 is also too light to be competitive.

As such, Unicrest U2 is also recommended for collection purposes only.

Use in Defense Combinations

If SwitchStrike Energy Layers are unavailable, Unicrest U2 can be put to use in the Defense Combination Unicrest U2 2/4/7/0 Cross/Glaive Atomic/Orbit/Needle. The low recoil shape and strong slopes of Unicrest U2 aids in the KO Resistance of the Forge Disc, Disc Frame and Performance Tip while compensating for the Burst Risk of using heavy Discs such as 0.
