In "Battle Ring Mode", Defense-S performs a standard ball tip. Since the ball tip is small, Defense-S has a small surface area, not to the degree of Performance Tips such as Orbit, Yard-S, and Atomic. The four tabs surrounding the ball tip act as brakes against KOs by striking against the stadium floor when the Defense-S Combination is struck, at the cost of Stamina. While the increase in height may imply that the ring of Defense-S has a better chance of making contact with the opponent's Layer, it is positioned too low for any opposing Layer to make contact with. However, the ring of Defense-S has four protrusions, which nullifies its Life After Death potential.

In "SlingShock Mode", the ball tip is hidden, revealing a small hole-flat tip that's more akin to Zephyr. This mode gives the Defense-S Combination a huge boost of speed as well as an increase in Stamina thanks to the hole-flat tip. Since the height of both Battle Ring Mode and SlingShock Mode are similar, the Defense-S Combination isn't as prone to being destabilized as other SlingShock Performance Tips. While SlingShock Mode may imply that a Defense-S Combination in this mode is capable of maintaining a Banking Pattern, the four tabs of the tip makes maintaining a Banking Pattern impossible. Of the two modes, Battle Ring Mode has the greater success.<onlyinclude></onlyinclude>

While the increase in height isn't detrimental to a Defense-S Combination's overall performance, Defense-S is outclassed Defense wise by other Performance Tips such as Orbit, Atomic, and Yard-S, making Defense-S practically useless in competitive play.

As such, Defense-S is recommended for collection purposes only.

This article is about Defense-S. For its normal counterpart, see Performance Tip - Defense (Burst).

Defense-S is a Performance Tip released by Hasbro as part of the Burst System as well as the SlingShock System. It debuted in western countries with the release of the SlingShock Single Pack Flame-X Diomedes D4 8 Defense-S.

Description

Defense-S, as its name implies, is a SlingShock Performance Tip based off of Defense. However, unlike the original Defense, Defense-S' ball tip is significantly taller and it features two tabs on either side that are connected to the ball tip, which is meant for the activation of the Performance Tip's "SlingShock Mode". As a part of the SlingShock System, Defense-S can be manually altered to switch between "Battle Ring Mode" and "SlingShock Mode"; in this case, by sliding the tabs to the other side, and then pushing both tabs downwards, and vice-versa.
