Type (Japanese: タイプ or 型) refers to the 4 categories used to classify the combat properties and characteristics of a Beyblade and its parts by their primary behavior in battle.
Overview
The concept of Types provide players with archetypes upon which they can select or build a Beyblade that suits their individual playing style and combat preference. Becoming familiar with these Types can prove valuable to a player's strategy as a thorough knowledge of parts can assist in Beyblade customization and general battle strategy. This knowledge can also be invaluable in identifying the parts used in the customization of an opponent's Beyblade during inspection before a match. Below is a simple description of each of the basic types and their characteristics.

Beyblade Top Types
Every top belongs to one of four combat categories (called Types), based on its primary battle strength. During battle, the Type Affinity of the competing Beys will determine how efficiently they battle each other, with the one holding an advantage effectively neutralizing the battle tactics of the other.
ATTACK TYPESBeyblades designed to move quickly around the Beyblade Burst Beystadium™ and hit with power.
STAMINA TYPESBeyblades designed to maintain their spin when left untouched. They can potentially out-spin a steady Defense Type.
DEFENSE TYPESThese Beyblades were designed to ward off attacks and maintain a stationary, stable position in battle.
BALANCE TYPES[1]These Beyblades combine the qualities of Attack, Stamina, and Defense types, and usually incorporate design elements from all three. |
Type Affinity
All Beyblades Types typically share a Type Affinity (Japanese: タイプ相性) with one another via their Type classification. This determines their overall advantage (Japanese: 有利) in a match-up depending on their customization in comparison to their opponent's.
Type Counters
Players that deploy Beyblades with countering types to that of their opponent's increase their chances of victory. It's important for Bladers to consider their Bey's Type when devising their strategy as the appropriate Type can counter your opponent's Beyblade enabling your Bey to fight more efficiently.
Traditionally, the Attack Type counters the Stamina Type, the Stamina Type counters the Defense Type, and the Defense Type counters the Attack Type. However, the Balance Type differs from the other three Types in the regard that these Beyblade tops typically improve upon the weaknesses of the other three Types. Balance Types normally possess relatively balanced Stats, including in the areas of Agility and Weight, making this Type adept at most situations, especially in the hands of expert Bladers.
Analysis
This section elaborates upon the defining characteristics of each of the 4 Types.
Attack Type Beys are known for their rapid speed and hard-hitting attacks. While these are the most dynamic of the Beyblade Types, by design, they typically possess low Stability and take increased Stamina damage during collisions.
Stamina Type Beys
Defense Type Beys
Balance Type Beys combines attributes from the other three Types for a Beyblade that is well-rounded and adaptable. While this affords them an impressive situational advantage, they generally lack the overall capability of exploiting the specific weaknesses of other Types, and must mainly relying upon the skill, strategy, and ingenuity of the Blader to be effective.

- ↑ Hasbro originally used the terms "Combination Type" and "Combo Type" interchangeably throughout production and distribution of their Generation 1 Beyblade products up to the Hard Metal System toyline. However, starting with production of Generation 2 Beyblades, Hasbro has since adopted "Balance Type" as the official, descriptive term.
