Unlock Unicorn Down Needle (アンロックユニコーン・ダウン・ニードル, Anrokku Yunikōn Daun Nīdoru) is a Defense Type Beyblade released by Takara Tomy as part of the Burst System as well as the Dual Layer System. It was released as a Booster in Japan on August 6th, 2016 for 972円.

In the toyline, it is the successor to Unicorn Ring Defense.

Energy Layer - Unlock Unicorn[]

Main article: Energy Layer - Unlock Unicorn

Takara Tomy's Unlock Unicorn is a round Energy Layer designed for Defense that features ten blades, nine of which are made up of clear plastic and make the "mane" and one which is made of colored plastic and makes "the horn" of this Layer's namesake; the mythical Unicorn, featured in the center.

The clear blades of the "mane" are smooth, compact and placed in a manner that deflects oncoming attacks, creating a low recoil design, while the single "horn" is shaped differently to create this Layer's gimmick; counter attack. Since the horn is much thinner and rests at a much higher angle than the rest of the blades, it creates a sizable gap that is, in theory, meant to provide Smash Attack to Burst the opponent and/or drain their Stamina. However, in practice, the angle and direction of the horn is ill-suited for such a purpose and instead creates a point of recoil, that is more recoil heavy when off balance, that drains Unlock Unicorn's Stamina.

This problem is further exacerbated by its teeth, which are very short and weak. While they can withstand the low recoil provided by the mane, the recoil provided by the gap makes Unlock Unicorn very prone to Bursts.

While the weight distribution of Unlock Unicorn does lend itself well to Stamina purposes, this does little to compensate for the recoil and teeth issues.

Forge Disc - Down[]

Main article: Forge Disc - Down

Down features a dropping shape akin to Armed and Vertical with thin bands that connect the interior of the Disc with the weighted nubs along the bottom portion. Like all other Forge Discs, it features two tabs with stylized 'D's that protrude from the top to fit into the slots of an Energy Layer.

Down's design is meant to lower the center of gravity on a Beyblade, doing so increases a Beyblade's Stability and reduces the risk of floor scrapes. In addition, the wide shape of Down focuses much of its weight around the perimeter, giving this Disc excellent Stamina properties and giving Attack Combinations greater aggressive movements with its Flywheel Effect.

However, Down has two features that give both advantages and disadvantages: The first is weight, Down's average weight means that its Knock-Out Defense is sub-par compared to more popular choices such as Heavy or Gravity, but at the same time gives more Burst Defense than the aforementioned Discs. The second is height and shape, while excellent for Stability and Stamina, the weighted nubs create a rough perimeter and the low positioning makes it easy for said nubs to contact the stadium floor late in battle when spin velocity is low, rendering any Life-After-Death null. However, the low center of gravity helps resist listing and Destabilization to prevent such contact.

Performance Tip - Needle[]

Main article: Performance Tip - Needle

Needle features a ball shaped tip at standard height covered with small studs and has four small tabs surrounding the center of the tip like Defense. The studded design is meant to increase friction with the stadium floor and the small tabs are meant to act as brakes by striking against the stadium floor, both to prevent Knock-Outs.

When in mint condition and launched with significant power, Needle moves around the stadium akin to an Attack Type for a short period of time before it moves and settles to the center of the stadium, like the Jog Ball Performance Tip from Metal Fight Beyblade. When the tip settles in the center of the stadium it will spin on very few of the studs and conserve Stamina, acting similarly to the stud of Fusion. When struck by an opposing Beyblade, more studs and the four tabs will come into contact with the curvature of the stadium floor, increasing friction and Knock-Out Defense at the cost of Stamina loss.

When worn however, the studs of the tip flatten down and create a smooth surface, creating a performance akin to Defense with greater Stamina and less initial roaming.

Depending on the launch strength, the initial movement can be used to avoid attacks from Beyblades in a banking pattern or it can bring the Beyblade too close to the edge and be vulnerable to Knock-Outs.

Trivia[]

  • Unlock Unicorn's name and avatar are based on the mythical Unicorn, a legendary creature that has been described since antiquity as a horse with a single large, pointed, spiraling horn projecting from its forehead. In European folklore, the unicorn is often depicted as a white horse-like or goat-like animal with a long horn, a lion’s tail, and cloven hooves; in Beyblade Burst, the avatar appeares as a horse.
